The Statue of Liberty is a welcome symbol for everyone: returning Americans, visitors, and immigrants. It is located on Liberty Island, southeast of Manhattan. It has a copper coating that covers an iron skeleton. The goddess holds in her left hand a plaque with the inscription “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI”, ie July 4, 1776, the date when she was declared independent of the United States of America. The Statue of Liberty was France’s gift to America. It was built in 1886 and remains a famous symbol of freedom.
